About Us

The Office of Academic Appointments and Internships coordinates central management and administration for internships, fellowships, and research associates throughout the Smithsonian Institution's 21 museums, research centers, offices, and the zoo. We serve as the principle provider of guidance and resources on best practices for successful career-building opportunities.

Our Mission

To facilitate inclusive, intentional, and transformative internships and fellowships that inspire academic, career, and identity enlightenment on a global level.

To achieve our mission, we:

  • Conduct outreach to and maintain relationships with scholarly and community partners to promote opportunities for diverse audiences and increase access and inclusivity
  • Provide training, resources, and support for academic appointment coordinators, internship supervisors, and fellowship advisors
  • Welcome and onboard interns and fellows with effective communication, orientations, and supplemental materials
  • Design and deliver impactful enrichment programming, career exploration activities, and alumni engagement opportunities
  • Foster relationship building amongst interns, fellows, and Smithsonian staff
