The Audrey Flack Short Term Fellowship
February 1, 2026
Application submission for the Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship will open on December 1, 2025
The Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship is open to predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior scholars researching topics in American art who reside, work, or attend school outside of commuting distance from Washington, D.C. Researchers whose personal circumstances (i.e., financial constraints, employment conditions, care-giving responsibilities, or other limitations) preclude them from participating in longer-term residencies are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit a statement justifying the rationale for a short-term fellowship.
Projects that require access to SAAM’s collections and staff expertise are prioritized, although those that utilize other Smithsonian resources are eligible. Applications will be evaluated on the originality and quality of the proposed research project; the applicant’s academic standing, scholarly qualifications, and experience; the project’s contribution to expanding broad perspectives of American art; and the extent to which the Smithsonian, through its research staff and resources, can contribute to the stated research goals.
SAAM welcomes submissions from applicants from all backgrounds and lived experiences. No citizenship restrictions apply; international applicants are welcome.
